Foods to Avoid with Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are an excellent solution to a wide range of smile imperfections — from missing teeth to severe discoloration. Once the veneers are set in place, however, you will want to avoid certain foods and drinks to help keep them in pristine condition.
Here are some foods to avoid with porcelain veneers. This is not a comprehensive list; just some of the things you should avoid eating or drinking with permanent porcelain veneers.
What Not to Eat with Porcelain Veneers
Because permanent veneers are bonded to the front of natural teeth, it’s critical to steer clear of foods and beverages that can damage the bonding material. In addition, some drinks can permanently stain veneers or existing teeth, causing discoloration.
- Hard Foods
Popcorn, hard nuts, and some seeds can chip veneers. When eating chicken or steak, those with veneers should avoid biting into the bones.
- Dark Liquids
Drinking dark liquids over time can cause stains on teeth and veneers, leading to permanent discoloration. One should avoid drinking coffee, black tea, colas, and red wine, if possible.
- Acidic Foods and Drinks
Certain citrus products like orange juice and tomato sauce can wear down the bonding material that keeps the porcelain veneers in place. This can eventually loosen its fit in the mouth and lead to more issues.
- Alcohol & Tobacco
Similarly, with citrus foods, alcohol, and tobacco consumption in excessive amounts can damage the bonding material keeping the veneers secure. Smoking and chewing tobacco may also stain and discolor porcelain veneers.
Even for those without veneers, chewing on ice causes long-term damage to teeth. Biting into ice can easily damage dental implants and veneers.
Other Things To Consider
Beyond avoiding certain foods and drinks, you can further ensure the longevity of your porcelain veneers with some behavioral changes. These include basic behavioral practices, such as always being sure to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth after meals.
But it also means working to stop activities such as nail-biting or opening packages with your teeth. These behaviors and habits can wear down veneers. And while some of us enjoy opening beer bottles and other alcoholic beverages with our teeth, that biting action can be very damaging to veneers!
