Detect Oral Cancer Early With A VELScope® Oral Cancer Screening

There are some types of cancer that can strike without warning. Every year in the United States, about 35,000 individuals have their lives changed due to oral cancer. However, in many cases, this can be prevented.

When you have a VELScope® oral cancer screening done, lesions can be found that are in early stages of growth. By catching oral cancer early, a patient’s five year survival rate is dramatically increased–80-90% greater!

A Screening That Is Quick And Painless

In most cases, the beginning stages of oral cancer are not visible. Oral cancer can sometimes progress to its later stages without any visible indication at all. Fortunately, new oral cancer detection technology has made it possible to detect cancer growths early, and it’s quick and painless!

The VELScope® imaging system uses a wireless viewing scope and a special light to create an enhanced view of areas inside of your mouth where lesions could be developing. The normal tissues in your mouth will illuminate a light green color, but if there is any abnormal tissue, it will show up as a shade of darker green.

If abnormalities are discovered during VELScope® Imaging, this does not automatically indicate that you have cancer. Your doctor may order a second screening to thoroughly evaluate your mouth, or perform a biopsy to verify results.

Are You At Risk For Oral Cancer?

If you frequently use tobacco products such as cigars, cigarettes, chewing tobacco or pipes, you are at a higher risk for developing oral cancer. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol also increases your risk. Here are other circumstances that can predispose you to oral cancer:

  • If you are a man who is over the age of 50
  • Both men and women can be HPV carriers.
  • If you are at risk for HPV, or have it already
  • If you experienced excessive sun exposure in your youth
  • Genetics can also play a role
